"Offension? What in the world is that supposed to mean?"
This question or one similar to that probably raced through your mind as you read my title for the first time. Perhaps your brain was stimulated by something in the title that seemed new and intriguing. Well, let me go ahead and get my initial thoughts out of the way. I started this blog post for a very specific reason. It is this: if you are the kind of person who takes things too literally and gets offended easily, stop it! Getting offended isn't going to change anything. Besides, if you easily get offended, the main thing you'll spend your time on is getting offended. Think about it...how many conversations a day do you have with people? (You can approximate a number in your head if you like.) Now multiply that number times 600. Divide by 2. That is how many times you could possibly get offended a day. However, that is not completely accurate as that is the
lower portion of the figuring. Let's say you have 20 conversations a day. When the math is completed, that would mean that you had the possibility of getting offended
6000 times a day. That's only with 20 conversations! Say you're a high school student or a college student and you see classmates in every class all day. Even if you're an adult and you have a job think of all the co-workers you talk to a day. You most likely have many more than twenty conversations a day. Plus, we aren't even including texting conversations or phone calls, where you could still get just as easily offended.
Now to explain the "Me?" part of the title. You may be thinking that you aren't that kind of person. the kind of person who doesn't get offended easily. Allow me to take a moment to convince you that you could actually be that kind of person. Say you're having a conversation with--let's say--Billy. (Sorry to any Billy's who may be reading this. It's the first name I thought of, so you should be honored...don't get offended. ;) ) You start off the conversation with the normal, "Oh, hey Billy! How are you?" (Billy) "I'm fine. How has that report you've been doing coming along?" First, he didn't ask you how you were, only about your report. Then when he does inquire after your well-being, (fancy talk for "ask you how you are"), he asks not how
you are, but how your
paper is. "
Oh yeah? I'll show him!" "It's fine." (The one-word answer cold shoulder.)
Do you have that one person in your life that you absolutely cannot stand? Do you ever talk to them? If so, it probably wasn't in a very friendly way. Let's just be honest here. You may have had a cold shoulder toward them, or maybe you were
fake friendly. Whichever way you did it, you went into it already being offended--by their existence. You don't like that person, so you have already preordained the fact that you don't like them and you are willing and ready to show it. It's like carrying a pistol with you everywhere you go. Ready to draw it at every turn. "Offension" is the same way.
So to conclude, don't take offense at everything that
could be offensive. Like I've
obviously proven, ;) you will end up spending all of your time getting offended because people say things subconsciously that they don't even realize could be offensive. The person who gets easily offended is like a person who sees an electric fence and touches it. You now know the fence is there, but you just really want to get to the other side, so you touch it again--and again, and again. Over and over until you become old, decrepit and cranky. Do you really want to be "that old mean person?" I don't think so.
So, you could be the type of person who gets easily offended without even knowing about it! Hopefully, I've enlightened you if you are. (Start realizing in conversations if you get offended and ask why?) Also, if you know you are one who gets offended easily, then take into account what I've said, the fact that it's true and try to change next time. If you aren't one who gets offended regularly, don't start now! Stay away from the electric fence.
Sincerely,
