Welp I guess the rainy fall weather has gotten my mind into flowery story mode because I have another short story. :) I think this is the closest together I've done posts in a lonnngggg time so I hope you like it! Just a heads up, this is kind of a gloomier story but I guess it matches the weather...
Dark rain clouds loomed overhead. A slight mist was raining down from the heavens and the dark cement of prison turned darker still as raindrops bled down. If you looked up to the top of that towering building you would see a crow. He was an abnormally large fellow. His feathers were black as pitch and his yellow eye surveyed the land. This is his territory--his kingdom. He knows every foot that treads there, every leaf that falls.
Each morning he perches atop his castle, brooding over his people. A man here, another there, all scattered about but all the same. A cookie-cutter orange is all he sees. He likes it that way for the sake of unanimity. One action out of line and a screeching “caw” rings through the courtyard of the prison. Every inmate slowly turns to see their king upon his throne. Prowling above, high in his glory, he ruffles his feathers to shake the rain. One inmate, new to this fictional kingdom, scowled up at the crow.
“This blasted bird won’t shut his beak. I’m sick of his crowing and squawking about.”
He was tired of authority...tired of cement walls...tired of the dark, looming clouds above.
How dare this bird mock me, he thought to himself. I’ll show him what for.
In the courtyard, he found many large stones, easy to fit in the palm of his hand.
The king, watching his orange-suited men, saw something not to his liking.
“Caw!”
He let out a cry, warning them of their misconduct.
The inmate, seeing his chance to quiet the bird once and for all let his stone fly. Up, up, up, it soared--and hit its mark square in the eye.
A flinch and a droop were all you could see until the dark guardian slipped into darkness. From the top, he fell. Down, down, down, to the soggy ground like a leaf from a tree. His body landed with a thud. His days of kingship were done.
The rain dribbled on, and after pausing a moment the inmates carried on about their mornings unbothered. An eerie silence settled over the prison courtyard. Although no man might admit it, each inmate would miss their king and his odd sense of normalcy.
